KIndergeld Services

Kindergeld is a state benefit that is available to all parents in Germany regardless of their income.

How much?

The amount of Kindergeld depends on the number of children in your household:

  • 1st and 2nd child: 204€ per child (from 01.01.2021: 219€)
  • 3rd child: 210€ (from 01.01.2021: 225€)
  • from 4th child onwards: 235€ per child (from 01.01.2021: 250€)

How long?

Kindergeld is paid monthly from the date of birth of the child until they turn 18 years old. In some cases, Kindergeld can be paid up until the child is 25 years old.

Who is eligible?

Biological parents (in some cases also grand-parents, step-parents and / foster parents) are eligible for Kindergeld. However only one person receives Kindergeld per child so that the parents have to decide between themselves who is going to be receiving the money.

E.g.: one child in family Smith, the parents decide that the mum is going to be the recipient for the 204€.

Conditions?

In most cases, parents are eligible if they:

  • live in Germany and / or pay taxes in Germany
  • live in the same household as the child
  • are a EU citizen or have a valid residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel)

Yes, you are eligible even if:

  • you don't work
  • you live abroad but have a German employment contract, pay your taxes in Germany
  • you are not German
  • you have a high income

How and when to apply:

Although Kindergeld is available to most families, you need to apply for it at the local Familienkasse. Kindergeld can be paid 6 months retroactively from the date of application. However, you have to apply within 4 years of the child being born or entering the country. After that your eligibility ends forever.
